Submission Guidelines: Fiction/Poetry

What We Don’t Want:
Sex, violence, and gore must be tastefully done, and not in excess. We do not want poor spelling, grammatical errors, or cliches. We don't want the formulaic or predictable or the same old princess and prince story.

What We Do Want:
We have no strict guidelines, only that the piece include some unreal or fantastical element, and must be imaginative and unique. Speculative Fiction is a broad genre with unlimited possibilities, and we want to explore every realm imaginable. We want strangeness, the off-beat, that ‘something that you don't see every day’, both in content and in style. Think of a tea party with Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Heinlein, Philip K. Dick and Marion Zimmer Bradley. Nothing is too strange, as long as it is clear and done well.

Length:
We publish fiction up to 7,000 words. We prefer 1,000-3,000. Poetry max length : 100 lines

Rights:
We claim exclusive electronic and print rights for one year from the date of publication in Imaginarium, after which we claim nonexclusive archival electronic and print rights. Basically, we claim the right to exclusively publish your story for one year. You can't publish it anywhere else in print or electronically for that time. After the year, you're free to print wherever you want, but the backissue, with your story in it, will remain available. If we are the first to print your piece, we also have First Print & Electronic Publishing Rights. Bear in mind that most pay publications will not publish pieces that have been published in print, eBook, or on the web, so for all intents and purposes after your work is published by us it can only be marketed as a reprint, which limits the number of markets that will accept it and reduces the pay rate it can receive. It is up to you, the author, to decide if publishing your work in print and/or eBook formats and/or on the web, giving up your First Publishing Right for no payment, is really what you want to do.

Pay:
Imaginarium is in a non-paying, non-profit market. We do it for the love.

Reprints:
Reprints are accepted. The author is responsible for making sure he/she has the right to submit the piece for publication. Please note where and when the piece was published in the cover letter.

Submission Process:
Email submissions to imaginariumsubs@gmail.com. At this time we are only accepting electronic submissions. It saves trees. Please submit documents in .rtf or .doc format, with 12pt Times New Roman, double spaced, 1” margins. Include your full name, a valid e-mail address, and title in the top left corner, and the word count in the top right corner. In the e-mail subject line, include “Submission”, your last name, and the title of the work. Cover letters are accepted but not necessary (unless it has been previously published - then it is mandatory). We accept a maximum of two prose works or five poems per author at once.
